LIMA
A city divided
Beneath the coffee culture which seems to attract the attention of foreign visitors, Peru faces a constant battle between the traditional and the modern. It is a country rich with diversity with a vibrant, growing economy yet is nonetheless a country divided. Though the official language is Spanish, brought over by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro, many indigenous groups still retain their native "precolombino" languages, the largest of which is Quechua. While Spanish is spoken in the larger cities, Quechua is primarily spoken in the countryside, "en el campo" and children in these tribal regions are expected to know Spanish and lose touch with their culture in order to succeed.
Peking
A city in crisis
The People's Republic of China has seen tremendous industrial growth in the past few decades through foreign investments and a strong internal commitment to modernization, but at what cost? Chinese culture is well connected to its long and storied history but is currently being uprooted by technology and industrialization. Though the positive effects of these societal shifts are clear with millions crossing over the poverty line each year, there is one visible consequence: pollution (hover over image to view). Many of China's urban centers have become overrun with pollution which is currently threatening to undermine all the treasures the country holds.
